CHANGE AND PROMISE FOR 2009

It seems the mantra of our times is "change." More than ever, our communities need public media to convene, connect, and collaborate in ways that build relationships and strengthen civic life.

As you seize the year ahead, we encourage you to take advantage of the robust resources NCO plans to support your work in 2009.

Understand where you are and where you want to go

The Community Engagement Spectrum

Assess and inform your engagement strategies by using our Community Engagement Spectrum. The Spectrum details three distinct approaches to community engagement. We will soon introduce a Diagnostic Tool for finding your station's current place on the Spectrum and facilitating an internal dialogue about your work. Used together, these tools will help you determine your station's current relationship with the community and how to become more essential to your community.

Connect and learn with your peers

Peer-to-peer Dialogue

Tap into our peer network to build relationships with your colleagues and deepen your engagement work. From Helping Communities Change their Stories to Integrating Social Media into Engagement, we offer a series of opportunities for you to learn from each other and build your skills. This year's first two Peer-to-peer Dialogues are:

  • January 28: Doing More with Less—Based on a NETA conference session just a week earlier, this call is for anyone struggling to implement engagement with waning resources.
  • February 11: Newcomer Idea Exchange—A conversational group for those new to community engagement or to public broadcasting. It meets at 2 p.m. ET on the second Wednesday of every month.

Register for Peer-to-peer Dialogues by emailing info@mediaengage.org. Learn more about Peer-to-peer Dialogues and see the full schedule here.

Connect to valuable information and tools through our online training Webinars. Watch for details in upcoming NewsBlasts about NCO-facilitated Webinars in February, March, and April on topics like Creating Internal Station Teams, Community Engagement Impact Award Recipients and new NCO training materials. Tell us what topics you'd like to see covered in other future Webinars.

Convene and collaborate with your partners

NCO Pipeline LIVE, our annual preview of upcoming programming and community engagement initiatives, will be in early June. Watch our monthly NewsBlasts for details. Invite your local partners to join you for NCO Pipeline LIVE via satellite or live Web stream so you can strategize together.
