Peer-to-peer Dialogue: Improving Community Partnerships

    Peer-to-peer Dialogue

Creating strong community partnerships is a challenge for all engagement professionals and a topic that regularly comes up during peer-to-peer dialogues. Next month's Peer-to-peer Dialogue will be devoted to improving partnerships. Join us as we grapple with the issue on Wednesday, Dec. 10 at 2 p.m. ET. Email info@mediaengage.org to register and be ready to share your own tips about improving and sustaining partnerships.

To start the conversation, we asked a few broadcast professionals to share their insights about partnerships. Their suggestions make up one of our new tools that we hope will evolve as you contribute your ideas. Take a look.

NCO Surveys How Stations Use Social Media

Academic research increasingly indicates that those who engage online are more likely to also engage offline (in person). With that research in mind, NCO recently reviewed 322 local station Web sites to gauge their use of social media tools for engaging their communities. Not surprisingly, stations that embrace the use of social media online appear twice as likely to engage in-person as well. Download the Report.

Game Playing Tied to Civic Engagement

If you've never considered adding games to your station's Web site, perhaps you should. In the first national survey of its kind, the Pew Research Center found that gaming is universal, diverse, often involves social interaction and can potentially cultivate teen civic engagement. The survey was conducted by the Pew Internet & American Life Project and was supported by the MacArthur Foundation.

Public Radio's Makers Quest 2.0

The Association of Independents in Radio, Inc. (AIR) is celebrating its 20th anniversary with the Makers Quest 2.0 or MQ2. With support from CPB, MQ2 is helping to identify "media makers" within and outside broadcasting that will lead public radio to new formats and platforms. Media makers from seven countries (including Scottish musician Billy Bragg) and every region of the U.S. submitted nominations. Thirty of those have been chosen to submit proposals by December 1. For the list of finalists and more about MQ2, visit MQ2.org.

Data Resources to Strengthen Impact

Gathering data as part of your planning process can lead to community engagement with greater impact. Here are resources to get you started:

Data Mapping
Mapping is a great way to identify local assets, networks and opportunities in your community. For a taste of what mapping can do, check out new NCO tools created for The Takeaway radio stations.

KIDS COUNT Data Book
Every year, the Annie E. Casey Foundation publishes its KIDS COUNT Data Book, a national and state-by-state profile of the well-being of America's children. It ranks states on 10 key measures and provides data on the economic, health, education, and social conditions of America's children and families. An online version of the book is available here.

IRS Statistics
Data for every county in the U.S. is available from the Internal Revenue Service (IRS). It's based on year-to-year address changes on individual income tax returns and is a great indicator of where new residents in a community come from. An online tool developed by the Charlotte Observer will help you obtain local data. View it here.

Mister Rogers' Sweater Drive Toolkit

Carry on a tradition of giving in your community with the Mister Rogers' Neighborhood Sweater Drive. With this unique project, everybody wins: the people who make the heartwarming contribution, those who benefit from the warm sweaters, and public broadcasting stations that demonstrate their value in a caring way. Family Communications, Inc. offers a toolkit with fun and easy ideas for planning and hosting a drive. Visit NCO's Community Engagement Pipeline for details.

Repository Pick: National Parks Las Vegas

Last month, Vegas PBS began rolling out its initiative National Parks Las Vegas: An Unlikely Adventure. They joined a host of community partners to draw diverse populations to local national parks. The effort will include geocaching activities for kids, video kiosks previewing the broadcast, and opportunities for people to share stories about their park visits online. Get more details at NCO's Repository.

NCO's mission is to increase public broadcasting's ability to serve local communities. We help stations engage and educate citizens, expand community relationships and stimulate civic participation across multiple service platforms.
