NCO Blast

February 2009
WILL, Amaris Bailey

My Source highlights: WUSM-FM and WILL

The video spot from WILL (Urbana, Ill.) is a powerful demonstration of the station's commitment to, in the words of a featured community partner, "help the youth of this community have a voice."

WUSM-FM in Hattiesburg, Miss. created this audio spot around a familiar story—a mother's morning rush out of the house.

NCO Continuing Collaboration with Harwood

    The Harwood Institute

We are delighted to continue our relationship with The Harwood Institute for Public Innovation. Over the past two years, NCO supported The Harwood Institute's Community Engagement Initiative with twelve stations. In 2009, we will partner even more closely.

Connect with Your Peers

Talk with your peers and discover ways to build more powerful community engagement by joining a Peer-to-peer Dialogue. On February 25, we'll share ideas for supporting community members who can't afford health care. On March 11, we'll hold our second conference call for Newcomers. Register by emailing info@mediaengage.org.

    NFCB Community Radio Conference

In early March, NCO will participate in the NFCB Community Radio Conference. This American Life - LIVE 2009

Here's an opportunity for public radio stations to engage their communities. On April 23, people will gather in more than 400 movie theaters across the country to watch This American Life — LIVE 2009. Feedback from last year's event revealed that attendees wanted to discuss the show. This year, your public radio station can make that happen. Learn more.

Repository Pick: Station Efforts for We Shall Remain

    American Experience

In preparation for the April broadcast, We Shall Remain Community Coalitions are creating significant community engagement about Native history and contemporary life. To give you a snap-shot of what's happening, we're highlighting the efforts of four stations: WDSE in Duluth, Minn., WTCI in Chattanooga, Tenn., South Dakota Public Broadcasting, and WFWA in Fort Wayne, Ind.

NCO's mission is to increase public broadcasting's ability to serve local communities. We help stations engage and educate citizens, expand community relationships and stimulate civic participation across multiple service platforms.
