Overall Goals: KZMU-FM (Moab, Utah) - When local artist, Bruce Hucko had a youth-based engagement proposal, he turned to KZMU-FM. He and the station started the “Voices of Youth-Moab” initiative, ongoing since 2004, a radio project designed to connect teenagers with the history, folklore, people and issues of their culture and community. The results are reciprocal: participating youth learn about their community, while their community is shown hidden elements that make up its unique character.

Overall Goals: WCTE works with Jammin at Hippie Jack's Productions to achieve its mission of outreach and quality programming by acting as a fiscal Sponsor to the program titled Jammin at Hippie Jack's.
Jammin at Hippie Jack's is a 13 part music television series that represents Folk, Blues, Bluegrass, and American roots musicians. This initiatives' goal is about revitalizing a musical genre, and recognizing talented singers, songwriters and instrumentalists whos music stems from a cultural era we want to preserve. Two years ago Director, Jack Stoddart built a stage on his farm in rural Crawford, Tennessee and named it ‘The Sundown Stage’. Stoddart's vision in building the stage was to help a vanishing genre of music not just survive, but thrive and to preserve an art form sometimes overshadowed by pop culture. The preservation of the Americana musician is the primary focus of the Jammin at Hippie Jack's Music TV series

Overall Goals: WXEL appreciates the opportunity to propose a special outreach initiative based on The National Parks: America's Best Idea. The WXEL studios are located in Palm Beach County, Florida near the northernmost portion of a unique national park---The Everglades; this portion of The Everglades National Park is found in western Boynton Beach at the Arthur R. Marshall Loxahatchee National Wildlife Refuge. This wildlife refuge includes over 221 square miles (147,000+ acres) of Everglades habitat. It's home to the American alligator and to the endangered Everglades snail kite. In any given year, as many as 257 species of birds may use the refuge's diverse wetland habitats.
Thanks to enthusiastic staff at this large Refuge, WXEL TV/FM has been invited to partner with the Refuge for at least two key events early in 2009 plus for strategic activities during the rest of the year before the Fall 2009 premiere. Both WXEL and the Refuge have strong contacts with the School District of Palm Beach County and its public access channel, T.E.N. (The Education Network, Ch. 19-Comcast). Partnerships between these two organizations and also with National Park Trust plus through coordinating with key non-profits targeting diverse populations will be helpful in facilitating efforts to reach traditionally underserved audiences, including a diverse group of adults and families and also 4th, 5th, and 6th grade African Americans, Latinos, and Haitians among others from Title I schools. WXEL TV/FM will offer extensive cross-promotions including collaborations with local commercial radio stations targeting diverse audiences such as Hispanics and Haitians(and WXEL's two weekly news magazine shows will feature a segment), giving recognition to the Refuge and/or National Park Trust, the School District of Palm Beach County/T.E.N. and the non-profits as additional strategic partners while fostering feelings of stewardship toward the Refuge and The Everglades National Park--as well as other units and national parks in the NPS system--in new and diverse audiences.

Overall Goals: The variety of land and seascapes within Hawaii Volcanoes National Park is found nowhere else in the world, and is perhaps the most comprehensive natural classroom available to students. However, with declining park attendance corresponding closely with the percentage drop in isle tourism, it has become evident that area locals, as well as the larger statewide community, have not taken advantage of the cultural, historical, environmental, and educational opportunities that the park provides. Therefore, PBS Hawaii, in partnership with Hawaii Volcanoes National Park, will organize outreach events aimed at renewing the local public’s interest in the park, especially reaching out to children and adults in underserved and disadvantaged communities.

Overall Goals: CET proposes to create a collection of localized resources and outreach to community residents and teachers that will support and encourage use of Cincinnati-area local, state and national parks. The target audience will be families and students in Greater Cincinnati. Even though the focus area will be on low wealth schools and our minority population, all project resources and materials will be freely and widely available throughout Greater Cincinnati and to teachers in all area public and private schools.
The long-term outcome of this project will be to raise awareness and provide resources that will result in increased utilization of area local, state and national parks. The short-term outcome will be to create partnerships with area stakeholders in the local, state and national parks in Southwest Ohio that will allow for collaboration and cross-promotion of collective and individual resources.
The resources to be created as part of this project will be an aggregation of existing high-quality lesson plans and other educational resources from area stakeholders and providers of environmental education. A correlation chart to Ohio Academic Content Standards for all resources will be created. All resources will be available via a dedicated web page(s) and a resource CD available directly to schools.
The outreach portion of the project will target both families and teachers, with a focus on our minority populations. Families will be targeted through outreach activities in selected Public Library of Cincinnati and Hamilton County branches and area parks. We will partner with outreach staff at area parks to offer public programs that include screening of the National Parks trailer as well as a trailer for CET's documentary of local city parks "A Century of Seasons: Cincinnati and Its Parks" that will be launched concurrently with "THE NATIONAL PARKS: AMERICA'S BEST IDEA and an overview of area parks resources and services. Another outreach effort will be to the area's retirement homes as we did with THE WAR efforts. An oral histories component will also be included as part of CET's overall efforts "Capturing the Voices...An Oral Histories Project".
