We Shall Remain - Narrative
WXXI will establish a We Shall Remain Working Group with partner organizations such as the Native American Culture Center (NACC), The Friends of Ganondogan, Rochester Museum and Science Center (RMSC), WXXI's Education Advisory Board and the Rochester Area Council for the Social Studies to assist in determining content to produce six localized "mini" We Shall Remain educational segments (3-4 minutes each in length) to broadcast on Homework Hotline, "Getting Historical". Materials will be distributed to Working Group partners and encouraged to facilitate and host a screening/discussion to their constituents.
The proposed partners would provide excellent advice and content expertise in the creation of the videos and promoting the initiative in the community. Long-range goals of NACC are to establish educational programs and special events for the general public. The Friends of Ganondogan are Native Americans and non-Natives who share a common understanding of the significance of Ganondogan State Historic Site location of the 17th Century Seneca village that boasts a small museum, a reconstructed long house and miles of trails featuring the significance of plant life in culture and belief. RMSC features interactive exhibits in science & technology, natural science and regional cultural heritage. WXXI's Education Advisory Board represents public and non-public schools in our eleven county viewing areas, if necessary, additional partners will be selected on their ability to represent the goals of this initiative.
WXXI Homework Hotline segment producer will meet and work with the Working Group to determine appropriate segment topics. Homework Hotline "Getting Historical" segments will coordinate with We Shall Remain series' format by presenting local stories linking the past to the present.
Homework Hotline is a statewide daily education program that is produced by WXXI. Every Wednesday during the school year, Homework Hotline offers a "Getting Historical" segment. The "Getting Historical" segments take the viewer back in time to show what was important. The segments are then archived on the Homework Hotline "Getting Historical" web site at http://interactive.wxxi.org/hotline/ for viewing anytime.
Homework Hotline also supports New York State's educational curricula by closely adhering to the New York State Learning Standards. WXXI Education Specialist will develop curricular materials as a resource for the locally produced segments aligning with New York State Learning Standards for 4th and 7th grade. Curricular materials will also be posted to the Homework Hotline Web site.
As part of expanding the initiative beyond the classroom and beyond the broadcast, localized produced segments will be digitized and uploaded into the EdVideo Online collection. The EdVideo Online collection currently holds 50,000 multimedia components that are made available by New York State Public Television, free of cost, statewide to K-12 educators and students. EdVideo Online services has the potential to reach more than 262,000 public, non-public and home school educators and can reach over 3.3 million students statewide.
To kick off the initiative in our community and focus awareness of the national program and Homework Hotline segments, the localized produced segments will be aired and aggressively promoted on air and on the web to coincide with the national broadcast of We Shall Remain.
WXXI will work with the The Rochester Area Council for the Social Studies (RACSS) to ensure that information and resource materials are disseminated throughout the education system. RCSS is a professional association of teachers and supervisors at the elementary, secondary, college and university levels. Membership is open to all persons who teach, supervise, develop curricula, engage in research or are otherwise concerned with social studies education.
