Overall Goals:
Thousands of Pittsburgh high school students are concerned with saving for college and how the current economy will affect that process. WYEP’s multimedia educational series for intergenerational audiences explores what parallels exist between the home mortgage and student loan industries, and what lessons can be learned to prevent a student loan meltdown. Through a series of instructional, explorative videos & podcasts, WYEP creates resources for students to avoid potential financial pitfalls. Given the youth focus, the station felt it was extremely important to make the majority of the project Internet-driven, including an online, educational game, Cents City.

Activity Name: Community Conversation and Interviews
Activity Type: Community/Educational Event
Middle- and high school students from the predominantly African American neighborhood of East Liberty participated in WYEP's FreeZone community activity. WYEP staff addressed the large group of students to introduce the conversation about the economy and begin dialogue, which was recorded. Individual interviews were then conducted in a separate room. While not all interviews were used for broadcast, the sessions were valuable in determining community needs and concerns. The two sessions combined for 65 participants.
